Integrated Plant and Control Design of a Continuously Variable Transmission

This paper presents an optimization framework to design the components and controller of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in integrated manner. Specifically, we aim at reducing mass transmission leakage losses that occur system. To do so, first formulate joint plant control problem including corresponding objectives constraints. Thereafter, propose proportional integral structure for CVT ratio control. The combined is formulated as nonlinear multi-objective problem, simultaneously solved using interior point method. We evaluate obtained on Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) well more aggressive driving scenarios, demonstrate optimized always capable realizing required performance. Additionally, study impact parameters performance by analyzing coupling strength between subproblems. Thereby, pulley radius found have strongest influence resulting variator level. Finally, leveraging presented framework, show up 13% 18% reduction losses, respectively, can be achieved without compromising desired trajectory over representative dynamic cycle.
